Typical timeline

Real-world processing — including the bottlenecks competitors don't talk about.

  1. Confirm eligibility & gather contracts

    ~3 weeks

Employer letter is the most common bottleneck.

  2. Apostille background check & degree

    ~4 weeks

Plan for delays at the State Department for US applicants.

  3. Submit application

    ~1 week

Either at Spanish consulate abroad OR at the UGE in Spain within 90-day tourist entry.

  4. Decision

    ~3 weeks

Spain has a positive silence rule — no answer in 20 working days often means approval.

  5. Pick up residence card (TIE)

    ~4 weeks

    Within 30 days of approval.

DNV: people also ask

Can I be a self-employed freelancer?

Yes. Freelancers must show their client base is at least 80% non-Spanish, and that their main work activity is remote.

What is the Beckham Law and do I qualify?

The Beckham Law (régimen de impatriados) lets new tax residents pay a flat 24% on Spanish income up to €600,000 for up to 6 years. Digital Nomad Visa holders typically qualify if they apply within 6 months of arrival.

Can my family come with me?

Yes — spouse and dependent children can be added in the same application with proof of additional income (75% SMI for first, 25% per additional).

Does this lead to citizenship?

Yes — same as other Spanish residencies: 10 years generally, 2 years for Latin American/Filipino/Portuguese nationals.

How is it different from the NLV?

DNV allows remote work and offers Beckham tax. NLV forbids work and uses standard tax rates. Income threshold is also higher for DNV.

Can I apply from inside Spain on a tourist stay?

Yes — Spain's startup law allows you to apply at the UGE (Unidad de Grandes Empresas) while in Spain on a Schengen tourist entry, and the resulting permit is valid for 3 years from the start.
